Construction of 1 Block of 48-Classroom Storey Building – Secondary School.
Among all the sectors that define a nation's future, education stands supreme — and in Borno State's Bama Local Government Area, a region that has endured some of the most severe consequences of Nigeria's North-East insurgency, the provision of modern, safe, and high-capacity educational infrastructure is both an act of reconstruction and a declaration of hope. Blue Sea Services Limited was commissioned by the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) — a World Bank-funded programme specifically designed to increase access to quality secondary education for adolescent girls in conflict-affected and educationally underserved states in Nigeria — to construct a single block of 48 classrooms in a multi-storey configuration at a secondary school in Bama LGA, Borno State. The choice of a 48-classroom storey building reflects the scale of educational infrastructure deficit in Bama, where years of insurgency destroyed or forced the abandonment of virtually all functional school facilities, leaving tens of thousands of children — and particularly girls, who face the greatest barriers to educational re-engagement in post-conflict settings — without access to secondary schooling. Constructing a multi-storey classroom block rather than a single-storey facility was an efficient use of the available footprint, allowing 48 classrooms to be delivered on a compact site while freeing up outdoor space for school grounds, assembly areas, and sports facilities. The structural design of the storey building employed reinforced concrete columns, beams, and floor slabs engineered to carry the dynamic loads of a high-occupancy educational building safely across multiple floors, with particular attention to structural robustness and seismic considerations appropriate for the North-East's geological context. Each of the 48 classrooms was constructed to AGILE's detailed technical specifications, with dimensions designed to comfortably accommodate the prescribed number of students per class, adequate natural ventilation through louvred windows positioned on both sides of each classroom to promote cross-ventilation and reduce thermal discomfort in Borno's hot climate, robust acoustic separation between classrooms to minimize disruption, durable concrete screed or tiled floors, painted plaster finishes on walls and ceilings, chalkboard or whiteboard installations, and built-in storage provisions. Circulation spaces including corridors, staircases with appropriate balustrades and handrails, and landing areas were designed to safely accommodate the rapid movement of large student populations between classes. Sanitation facilities including gender-segregated toilets and washrooms were constructed on each floor level, with connections to the school's sewage system. The complete electrical installation included distribution boards, wiring, and light fittings throughout all classrooms and common areas. External works included the construction of ramps and accessibility features in compliance with inclusive design standards, ensuring that students with physical disabilities can access all floors of the building. Blue Sea Services Limited completed this substantial and technically complex construction project within the agreed timeline and to the complete satisfaction of the AGILE programme team. The handover of this 48-classroom storey building to the Bama LGA secondary school community represented a defining moment — a towering, visible symbol of post-conflict educational recovery, and a physical manifestation of the commitment of the Nigerian government, the World Bank, and Blue Sea Services Limited to ensuring that adolescent girls in Borno State can pursue their education in a safe, dignified, and fully equipped environment.
