Emergency Erosion Control & Protection of Tower T61

Completed Agbara-Ojo, Lagos State, Nigeria

Nigeria's national electricity grid depends on a network of high-voltage transmission lines stretching across the country, and the structural integrity of every tower on these lines is critical to the stability of power supply to millions of Nigerians. In September 2022, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) identified an emergency situation at Tower T61 along the 132KV DC transmission line running between Agbara and Ojo in Lagos State, where active soil erosion had severely compromised the foundation stability of the tower, creating an imminent risk of structural failure that could have caused the collapse of the transmission line and widespread power outages across the Lagos grid. Recognizing the critical urgency of the situation, TCN contracted Blue Sea Services Limited to carry out emergency erosion control works and structural protection measures to secure Tower T61 and arrest the erosion threat immediately. Blue Sea Services Limited mobilized rapidly to site, deploying engineers and equipment within hours of contract award to begin assessment and intervention works. The emergency scope of work included the construction of reinforced concrete foundation protection aprons around the base of the tower, the installation of gabion basket erosion barriers to check further soil loss around the tower's foundation zone, the construction of concrete-lined drainage channels to redirect surface water runoff away from the tower site, backfilling and compaction of eroded areas with suitable granular materials, and the installation of slope protection measures to stabilize the embankment surrounding the tower. All works were executed under intense time pressure, with round-the-clock site operations implemented to minimize the duration of risk to the transmission infrastructure. The intervention was completed successfully, with Tower T61 structurally secured and the erosion threat effectively neutralized. This project exemplifies Blue Sea Services Limited's capacity to respond to critical infrastructure emergencies with speed, expertise, and decisive action.
